Patient Codes – Clinical Case

This month’s Wellness Wednesday, Patient Codes – Clinical Case, demonstrates why having a vascular access partner who is not rushed or incentivized to get to the “next case,” and has deep expertise in difficult IV access, matters.

In this Patient Case, a Vascular Wellness vascular access clinician had just completed a procedure in a hospital when she heard that a different patient nearby had coded, was transported to the ICU, and then coded again. Knowing that this hospital partners with and relies on Vascular Wellness regularly for vascular access needs and assistance in complex cases such as this, she stayed near in case her expertise was needed.

The care team looked for central access but was unable to attempt it because the patient’s internal jugular had fully collapsed with respiration. The physicians began discussing potential temporary measures until perhaps an OR and surgeon could be available. The Vascular Wellness clinician then introduced herself, shared her recommendations and experience in situations like this, and asked if she could try to obtain PICC access in the patient.

Patient Codes - Clinical Case about Vascular Wellness expertise in critical situations

All Vascular Wellness clinicians undergo extensive training to achieve and maintain expertise in more than just placing vascular access devices, including in DIVA (difficult IV access) patients. They have a deep understanding of how to perform a thorough patient assessment, including a review of their medical condition and planned procedures, and how they can impact what vascular access device is appropriate. Not only are they often called to gain vascular access when others were unsuccessful – as in this patient case – but they are often called for a consult to assess the patient and then recommend and place the clinically appropriate device.

Vascular Wellness is patient-centered, providing expert care at the bedside – whenever and wherever it is needed – from PICCs, Midlines and PIVs to advanced central lines such as Dialysis Catheters, Tunneled Central Lines, Permcaths, Internal Jugulars, Mid-Thigh Femorals, and more. 7 days a week, after-hours, weekends & holidays.
