Parenteral Nutrition Administration Training
Parenteral Nutrition Administration Training
During the Parenteral Nutrition Administration course, a Vascular Access Board Certified (VA-BC), practicing nurse clinician will teach and train nurses how to manage a patients’ well-being and safety with respect to vascular access during Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and Partial Parenteral Nutrition (PPN). Training includes an overview of essential considerations when administering parenteral or intravenous nutrition, key differences between TPN and PPN and their associated catheter lines, best practice guidelines for sterile access, how to safely administer TPN through the central venous catheter line, how to make catheter selections appropriately, and how to ensure proper TPN delivery, including risk identification and management. Through didactic (classroom), simulation, and hands-on training, participants gain the knowledge and skills required to administer TPN and PPN. Each training class is customized to the unique healthcare settings of the participants involved, their specific supplies and equipment, and addresses problem areas identified prior to and during the course. Upon completion, participants will know the significant differences between TPN and PPN, and the types of vascular access devices most appropriate for supplying nutrients to their patient and will be trained and confident in their ability to select and administer the proper delivery of central and peripheral parenteral nutrition.
