Today’s Vascular Wellness Voice features a Nurse Clinicians in Action Clotted Fistula Patient Case. In this clinical case, a patient’s fistula clotted in the middle of dialysis and required emergent temporary dialysis access. The patient was recovering from major surgery in a Long-Term Acute Care Rehabilitation Hospital (LTACH). Unfortunately, the medical team was unsuccessful in gaining new vascular access, and after nearly two days, the situation became critical. Transporting him to another facility for a surgical procedure by an Interventional Radiology team was not an option, so Vascular Wellness was contacted, and a clinician arrived within three hours to place a Temporary Dialysis Catheter, or Vascath, at the patient’s bedside.

Nurse Clinicians in Action Patient Case:
Clotted Fistula Requires Urgent Vascath
Vascath for Dialysis
Having a specialized vascular access partner who is skilled in handling complex and emergent procedures, such as the placement of dialysis catheters at the bedside, seven days a week, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays, greatly enhances our client’s ability to quickly and successfully treat patients. Vascular access service at the bedside eliminates the need for transportation to another facility, as well as the costs associated with it. It helps improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and Press Ganey scores, especially when the result is reduced hospital length of stay.

Featured in an article in the Triangle Business Journal, our own Vascular Wellness CEO points out the need for access to healthcare services for everyone, regardless of socioeconomic standing or location… “The fact that our clinicians go to patients extends the reach of health care to rural areas and wherever patients are… We’re able to bring medical care to patients who may have transportation challenges or aren’t near a medical center.”
