Pediatric DIVA Patient with Trisomy 18

Today’s Vascular Wellness Voice features a patient case that describes how a pediatric DIVA patient with Trisomy 18 (a rare genetic disorder) needed vascular access for antibiotics. The unit nurses made several attempts to place a PIV but were unsuccessful, and the pediatric patient became very upset from the repeated painful attempts. At the request of the patient’s father, who understood that his daughter was a DIVA (Difficult IV Access) patient, the nurses called the Vascular Access Team – Vascular Wellness – for help.

Pediatric DIVA patient with trisomy 18 clinical case story

Patients may have a condition called difficult intravenous access (DIVA) as a result of a number of factors, including age, weight, height, cancer, diabetes, drug abuse, vein visibility, and vein palpability. Regardless of the reason, it is always advisable to seek out the assistance of a Vascular Access expert to avoid the risk of multiple, painful needle sticks, which can lead to patient stress and anxiety as well as medical complications. Consulting Vascular Access Experts such as Vascular Wellness improves patient outcomes and overall quality of care, especially in DIVA patients.

Vascular Access Training and Education from Vascular Wellness

Vascular Access Education and Training by Vascular Wellness is a comprehensive and unique program that empowers nurses and advances healthcare. Our Vascular Access Education and Training courses are taught by practicing, Vascular Access Board Certified (VA-BC) nurse clinician specialists and experts (not just educators) who regularly place vascular access devices in patients like the one in the patient case above, and train or precept nurses. This provides students with an exceptional educational experience.

The courses incorporate best practices, national guidelines, and practical experience across various healthcare settings. Participants receive didactic, simulation, and/or mannequin-based education and training in a classroom setting, and can incorporate live stick precepting and/or competency, as applicable. We also bring our training to you and customize it to your healthcare setting, equipment, and supplies. Hiring Vascular Wellness for your education and training needs is the smart and safe choice.
