Small Bore Central Line Insertion Training
Course Summary
During the Small Bore Central Line Insertion Training course, a Vascular Access Board Certified (VA-BC), practicing nurse clinician will teach and train nurses on the proper use of Small Bore Internal Jugular and Mid-Thigh Femoral Central Lines, how to properly place Small Bore Internal Jugular and Mid-Thigh Femoral Central Lines using Ultrasound Guidance, and how to recognize and appropriately respond to complications. Training includes instruction on how to gain vascular access in a variety of challenging situations and how to use ultrasound to visualize and select a vein for intravenous cannulation. Through didactic (classroom), simulation, and hands-on training, participants gain the knowledge and skills necessary to properly place ultrasound-guided Small Bore Internal Jugular and Mid-Thigh Femoral Central Lines when clinically appropriate. Each training class is customized to the unique healthcare settings of the participants involved, their specific supplies and equipment, and addresses problem areas identified prior to and during the course. Upon completion, participants will be trained in recognizing, assessing, managing, and properly placing Small Bore Internal Jugular and Mid-Thigh Femoral Central Lines using ultrasound guidance for vein visualization, including understanding indications and contraindications for Central Line catheter placement. Additional emphasis will be placed on the appropriate and safe use of these lines as clinically appropriate alternatives to PICCs and Midlines.
